How to Switch Dog Food Safely — And What to Switch To

Switching your dog's food the wrong way causes digestive upset, loose stools and fussiness — none of which are actually your dog's fault. A sudden change in diet disrupts the gut microbiome, which takes time to adjust to new ingredients. Done correctly, a food transition is smooth, settled and quick. This guide covers both the how and the what — including how to know which food is worth switching to before spending money on a full bag.

If you're switching because your dog is showing signs their current food isn't working — itchy skin, loose stools, low energy or a dull coat — this guide will help you make the change confidently and safely.

Why Dogs Get an Upset Stomach When You Change Their Food

A dog's gut is home to billions of bacteria specifically adapted to digest their current diet. When you introduce new ingredients, the bacterial populations have to shift to process the new food. This process takes time — typically seven to ten days — and during this period, loose stools, gas and mild digestive upset are normal if the transition is rushed.

This isn't a sign the new food is wrong. It's a sign the transition was too fast. The solution is always a gradual crossover, not returning to the old food.

The 7–10 Day Transition Method

I use this exact method every time I rotate Ted's food — he moves between Digestive Care, Weight Control & Joint Care and Skin & Coat Care throughout the year, and each transition follows the same gradual process. It has never caused him a problem.

  • Days 1–2: 75% old food, 25% new food
  • Days 3–4: 50% old food, 50% new food
  • Days 5–6: 25% old food, 75% new food
  • Days 7–10: 100% new food

For dogs with particularly sensitive digestion, extend this to fourteen days by moving more slowly through each stage. Never rush the final jump to 100% — this is where most upsets occur.

Signs the Transition Is Going Well

During a successful transition you should see consistent or improving stool quality, maintained appetite and energy levels, and no vomiting or excessive gas. A temporary slight softening of stools in the first few days is normal and not a concern.

Signs You Need to Slow Down

If you see very loose stools, vomiting or your dog completely refusing to eat, slow the transition down and spend longer on each stage. This is almost always a pace issue rather than a food compatibility issue.

How to Know What to Switch To

This is where most owners get stuck. There are hundreds of dog foods on the market and choosing the wrong one means you go through the entire transition process only to end up with a food that still doesn't suit your dog. Our guide on how to choose the right dog food gives you a clear framework for identifying what your dog actually needs before you commit to a new recipe.

The smarter approach is to try before you commit. A small sample pack lets you assess palatability and your dog's digestive response before purchasing a full bag — removing the risk entirely. To understand why AI dog food matching makes finding the right recipe so much faster, it's worth reading how the recommendation process works before you start browsing options.
