What Is AI Dog Food Matching and How Does It Work?

Choosing dog food has traditionally meant reading labels, hoping your dog likes the taste, and finding out three weeks later whether it agreed with their digestion. AI dog food matching changes that approach entirely — using your dog's specific profile to recommend the recipes most likely to work before you spend money on a full bag. Here's how it works.

What AI Dog Food Matching Actually Does

An AI dog food matcher takes structured information about your specific dog and matches it against a database of food recipes, identifying which formulas best align with their needs. It considers factors that a label comparison can't — the combination of breed-specific predispositions, life stage requirements, activity demands, health conditions and dietary history. To understand why this is such a step forward, it helps to read about the rise of personalised dog nutrition and what it means for how we feed our dogs.

What Information Does It Need?

  • Breed — different breeds have different predispositions. Labradors are prone to weight gain and joint issues. Cocker Spaniels are prone to skin and ear sensitivity. German Shepherds often have digestive sensitivities.
  • Age and life stage — a 10-week-old puppy and a 9-year-old senior have completely different requirements for protein levels, calcium ratios, calorie density and joint support.
  • Activity level — a working Border Collie burns two to three times the calories of a sedentary house dog of the same size.
  • Neutered status — neutered dogs have a reduced metabolic rate and are more prone to weight gain.
  • Sensitivities or allergies — known triggers should be excluded entirely from recommendations.
  • Current food — understanding what the dog is currently eating helps identify what's missing or causing issues.

What Does It Output?

Rather than a list of every possible option, a well-designed AI matcher outputs a shortlist of the top matching recipes — typically three — ranked by how closely they align with your dog's profile. From there, building a sample box lets you test palatability and digestive response before purchasing a full bag.

Why This Is Better Than Guessing

The average dog owner changes their dog's food two to three times before finding one that works consistently. AI matching short-circuits this process by making an informed recommendation upfront — based on your specific dog, not a generic average. Introducing TED — Ultimate Pet Foods' AI Dog Food Matcher

TED (The Expert Dog) is the AI dog food matcher I built at Ultimate Pet Foods — named after my own miniature dachshund. The idea came from the way I personally manage Ted's nutrition: I reassess his needs every few months and rotate his food accordingly, cycling between Digestive Care, Weight Control & Joint Care and Skin & Coat Care. TED gives every dog owner access to the same personalised thinking. For the full picture of where this is all heading, read our piece on why personalised dog nutrition is the future of pet feeding.

TED takes your dog's name, breed, age, weight, activity level, neutered status, any sensitivities and their current food — and outputs three personalised recipe recommendations. Sample boxes start from just £2.99 for 3 samples and £3.99 for 5 samples.

About the Author

Glenn Bell is the founder of Ultimate Pet Foods. He started the company in 2012 after being told by a pet shop assistant that "anything from this wall will do" when buying food for Kirk, his yellow Labrador. Since then he has spent over a decade researching canine nutrition and building one of the UK's most transparent dog food brands. He is currently studying for his Canine Health & Nutrition Diploma with BCCS. His dog Ted, a miniature dachshund, guides the brand's approach to rotation feeding every day.
