Gum disease — or periodontal disease — begins when plaque bacteria trigger an inflammatory response in the gum tissue (gingiva). Left untreated, this inflammation destroys the connective tissue and bone that hold teeth in place, resulting in gum recession, pocket formation, and ultimately tooth loss (VOHC, 2019).

The progression is driven by two interacting factors: bacterial load (the number and type of bacteria in the mouth) and the gum tissue's ability to repair and defend itself. Diet influences both directly.

Hydrolysed collagen peptides provide the amino acid building blocks — particularly glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline — that gingival fibroblasts need to synthesise new collagen. This doesn't just theoretically support repair; it has been demonstrated in controlled clinical research.

The Clinical Evidence

In a randomised controlled trial, 39 patients with chronic periodontitis received either collagen peptide supplementation (Verisol® B) or placebo, alongside professional mechanical plaque removal. The collagen peptide group demonstrated significantly greater reductions in bleeding on probing (BoP), gingival index (GI), and periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) compared to placebo (Zdzieblik et al., 2022).

In a directly relevant canine study, Beagle dogs with dental biofilm-induced gingivitis received collagen tri-peptide (CTP) supplementation. After the supplementation period, the CTP group showed significant improvements in gingival microcirculation, a reduction in capillary hyperaemia, and a higher ratio of collagen fibre area to inflammation area — indicating enhanced gum tissue health and regeneration (Yamamoto et al., 2024).

Sodium Hexametaphosphate (6,150 mg/kg)
