The primary cause of bad breath in dogs is the activity of anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity — specifically bacteria that produce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) as metabolic by-products. VSCs are the chemical compounds responsible for the characteristic smell of bad breath: hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg), methyl mercaptan (rotting cabbage), and dimethyl sulphide.
These bacteria proliferate in environments with high organic matter and low oxygen — exactly the conditions found in plaque, tartar deposits, and infected gum pockets.
